Robert A. C. (Bob) Stewart

Alex Cheyne
Managing Editor

Alex has worked for SBP Journal since 2006. Originally employed as a copyeditor, she has been the point of contact for authors and reviewers as Operations Coordinator (2009-2013) and currently as Managing Editor (2013– ). Her role involves overseeing journal operations and the delivery of each journal issue. She also manages the flow of manuscripts through the publication process. Alex obtained a BA majoring in English Literature from Massey University in 2006. She has previous experience in conference management, reference work editing, and academic assessment. Her interest in literature continues, as well as in New Zealand and world history, and – specific to social psychology – she particularly enjoys studying cross-cultural communication and personality types. She lives in Hermosillo, Mexico, with her husband, Jason.


Helen Owen
Associate Editor

Helen completed a BSc(Hons) in Psychology in 2011, and more recently a PhD in Social Psychology at the University of Otago. She has researched in the areas of language and deception, social categorization, attractiveness, and consumer psychology. She has also been involved in interdisciplinary research with information scientists and linguists. Helen is looking forward to learning more about the “other side” of publishing through working with the SBP Journal team. She has previously taught undergraduate psychology, volunteered as a phone counsellor, and worked with youth. She enjoys blogging, writing, music, wine-tasting, travelling, spin, and aqua-fitness. 


Suzi Brown
IT Manager

Suzi has worked as IT Consultant for SBP Journal since 2000. She has been involved in the journal’s online presence, keeping up with the latest cutting edge technological advances. Suzi feels privileged to have been part of these changes since 1990. One of these changes has been implementing the change from posted paper manuscript submission, to emailed manuscript submission, and now online manuscript submission, and online reviews. She has qualifications and experience in Information Technology, hardware and software, network systems, web design and maintenance, help desk services, and advanced use of software applications. She lives in Palmerston North, New Zealand, and has two adult daughters. Her interests include technology, reading, gardening, leadlight design and construction, and arts and crafts.


Noé Cruz
Marketing Manager

Noé Cruz was born in Mexico City and has developed his professional career there. He obtained a Bachelor of Marketing in 2011 and since then has used his passion for business growth to help start-up businesses achieve their marketing goals. He also has experience in the publishing field, having been involved in the production of one of the most widely distributed journals both in Latin America and internationally. Noé and his wife, Allana (Editorial Assistant for SBP Journal), share a passion for traveling and enjoy the hustle and bustle of living in one of the most populous cities in the world.


Dorothy Pilkington

Dorothy began working for SBP Journal as a proofreader and copyeditor in 2001. She has a BA degree in languages and history from Victoria University of Wellington and a Diploma in Education from Massey University. She has had a long voluntary involvement with the New Zealand Historic Places Trust and in 2006 received the New Zealand State Honour of Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in recognition of this work. Dorothy has a special interest in linguistics and the teaching of English as a second language.

Sarah Krivan

Sarah has worked for SBP Journal since 2007 as a copyeditor, taking on the additional roles of Marketing Manager (2013–) and Publications Consultant (2009–2012). She meets the journal’s marketing needs, monitors social media accounts, manages promotions and related projects, and assists the editorial board. Sarah obtained a Bachelor of Science in 2009 (Psychology major), and a Graduate Diploma in Business Studies in 2010 (Management major), both from Massey University. She is interested in traveling and reading, and instructs group fitness classes at a gym in her spare time. Sarah lives in Palmerston North, New Zealand, with her husband, Fabian. Sarah is currently on maternity leave from her marketing role.

Katharine Samuel

Katharine worked as an Interlibrary loan librarian in Information Services at the University of Canterbury (Christchurch, New Zealand) central library for 20 years before retiring in 2009. She has a library qualification and a BA (Canterbury) in Art History. Katharine has two daughters, and enjoys tramping, reading, travel, history, track and field athletics, sociology, concerts, theatre, art, and opera.


Lesley Aitken

Lesley currently lives in the central North Island, but has a nomadic lifestyle with her husband working in locum ministry. She has worked in education for over 40 years, including: secondary teaching in maths, English, and physical education; tertiary tutoring in distance education; and supporting students in Auckland Prison. Life outside of work involves boating, skiing, tennis, indoor bowls, and quieter pursuits such as reading and dressmaking.


Emily Duncan

Emily joined the SBP Journal team in 2012 having previously worked as a secondary school English and Drama teacher. She holds a BA in English, Theatre, and Film from Victoria University Wellington, a Graduate Diploma in Teaching from the Dunedin School of Education, and recently completed her Honours in English Literature at Massey University. Based in Dunedin, Emily is a PhD candidate in Theatre Studies at the University of Otago. She is also a produced playwright and a presenter/producer for a weekly community radio arts show. 

Julie O’Brien

Julie is a qualified journalist and copyeditor with 15 years’ experience in writing, copyediting, and proofreading. She has also had a 15-year career as a counsellor and psychotherapist. In 2014, she moved with her husband to Kerikeri in New Zealand’s Far North and brought together both threads of her career to work as a freelance editor specializing in psychology and health. Julie is also writing a book on the process of personal change and its relationship to the social change needed in the world. She enjoys spending time in her garden.


Support Team


Philippa Proctor 

Based in Palmerston North, New Zealand, Philippa has worked as a typesetter for close to 25 years bringing journals, newsletters, and manuscripts to print ready stage. Her current portfolio includes all of these forms, including the typesetting for SBP Journal. Philippa has been working with Dr Stewart and his team for over 20 years. In 2008, she set up her own venture, Pip’s Pre-Press Services, accepting casual, short, and long term typesetting contracts.

Fanchao (Martin) Meng
Chinese translator

Fanchao (Martin) Meng has worked for SBP Journal since 2013 as a Chinese translator. He is responsible for monitoring the SBP social media account on Sina Weibo, and translation of journal documents including newsletters and marketing materials.  Fanchao obtained a Bachelor of Animal Science in 2010 and a Master of Communication in 2013, majoring in Photo Media.  He is interested in traveling, swimming, music, art, and photography. He lives in Perth, Western Australia.



Lili (Lily) Jia
Publications Assistant

Lily joined SBP Journal in 2015 as Publications Assistant, and is responsible for monitoring the SBP databases, the packaging and dispatch of print issues, and assisting with subscription maintenance. While living in China, Lily obtained a Bachelor of Engineering (2005) and a Master of Engineering (2009), majoring in Food Science and Engineering. After moving to New Zealand in 2012 to pursue further academic study, Lily completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Science (Human Nutrition major) and is currently a PhD candidate at Massey University, Palmerston North.


Patricia Prince
Operations Assistant 

Patricia was contracted by SBP Journal in 2013 as Operations Assistant to the Managing Editor, Alex Cheyne. Canadian-born, Patricia spent her childhood in Canada, as well as Germany, the Caribbean, and later years in Central and South America. She currently lives in Alamos, Sonora, Mexico. She also works online as a contract writer and editor specializing in work with authors who speak English as a second language. Her academic and work experience include the Department of Medicine at the University of British Columbia and the BC Children’s Hospital, Yellow Pages GroupTM Marketing Specialist and Editor for Canadian travel, leisure and design magazines, copywriting for websites, investor reports, and more. Patricia loves to read and loves to write.


Allana Cruz
Editorial Assistant

Allana joined the SBP Journal team in 2015 as an Editorial Assistant. Originally from Australia, she now lives in Mexico City, and also works teaching English to students as a second language. She has a Certificate in Business Administration, speaks Spanish, and has considerable experience in customer service as well as administration in both financial and legal fields. Allana and her husband – a Mexico City local – share a passion for traveling and, of course, eating and cooking a wide variety of Mexican dishes.
