Alex Cheyne
Managing Editor

Alex has worked for SBP Journal since 2006. Originally employed as a copyeditor, she has been the primary point of contact for authors and reviewers as Operations Coordinator (2009–2013) and Managing Editor (2013–present). Her role involves overseeing journal operations, implementing initiatives in journal strategy, and managing the flow of manuscripts through the publication process. Alex obtained a BA (English Literature major) from Massey University in 2006. She lives in Mexico City with her husband, Jason, where, outside of journal activities, she enjoys doing volunteer work, reading, and cooking—as well as the ongoing challenge of communicating in Spanish!


Beatriz Portillo
Associate Editor

Beatriz joined the SBP Journal team in 2018 as an Associate Editor. Originally from Mexico, she now lives in Sydney, Australia, and works teaching Psychology to undergraduates at The University of Sydney. She has a BSc (Hons) in Psychology and is currently in her final months as a PhD candidate at The University of Sydney. Her research is focused on personality, attachment, and sexual self-disclosure. The aim is to understand how the personality and attachment of each individual affect the levels of personal sexual information they disclose to their partners. She enjoys watching movies, outdoor activities (especially swimming), volunteer work, music, and learning from other countries and cultures, especially through travel. 

Keren Segal
Associate Editor

Keren submitted her PhD in Psychology at the University of Otago, New Zealand, in 2018. Her thesis focused on immortality through possessions. She holds a BA in Psychology and an MA in Sociology from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel, where she also taught qualitative research methods in teachers’ continuing education programs at the School of Education. She has worked as a dialogue group facilitator in encounter groups of Palestinian and Jewish-Israeli youth. Keren lives in Dunedin with her family and enjoys raising her two daughters—as well as her small veggie garden and several happy chickens—and cooking and baking vegan food.

Suzi Brown
IT Manager

Suzi has worked in various IT roles for SBP Journal since 2000. Now IT Manager, she maintains the journal’s online presence, keeping up with the latest cutting-edge technological advances, including implementing the change from paper-based publishing to an entirely online system. Suzi has qualifications and experience in information technology, hardware and software, network systems, web design and maintenance, help desk services, and advanced use of software applications. She lives in Palmerston North, New Zealand, and has two adult daughters. Her interests include technology, reading, gardening, hula hooping, leadlight design and construction, and arts and crafts.

Noé Cruz
Marketing Manager

Noé joined the SBP Journal team in 2016. He manages the journal’s social media accounts and is responsible for the journal’s marketing strategy and implementation. Born in Mexico City, Noé developed the majority of his professional career there and obtained a Bachelor of Marketing in 2011. Since then he has used his passion for business growth to help start-up businesses achieve their marketing goals, and was involved in the production of one of the most widely distributed journals in both Latin America and internationally. Noé and his wife, Allana (Editorial Assistant for SBP Journal), share a passion for traveling and recently moved to the cultural city of Merida in south-east Mexico.

Allana Cruz
Editorial Assistant

Allana joined the SBP Journal team in 2015 as an Editorial Assistant. Originally from Australia, she now lives in Merida, Mexico, and also works teaching English to students as a second language. She has a Certificate in Business Administration, speaks Spanish, and has considerable experience in customer service as well as administration in both financial and legal fields. Allana and her husband (Noé Cruz, Marketing Associate for SBP Journal) share a passion for traveling and, of course, eating and cooking a wide variety of Mexican dishes.



Dorothy Pilkington

Dorothy began working for SBP Journal as a proofreader and copyeditor in 2001. She has a BA degree in languages and history from Victoria University of Wellington and a Diploma in Education from Massey University. She has had a long voluntary involvement with the New Zealand Historic Places Trust (now Heritage New Zealand) and in 2006 received the New Zealand State Honour of Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in recognition of this work. Dorothy has a special interest in linguistics and the teaching of English as a second language.

Sarah Krivan 

Sarah has worked for SBP Journal since 2007 as a copyeditor and was also responsible for the journal’s project and marketing work as Publications Consultant (2009–2012), Marketing Manager (2013–2017), and Project Manager (2017–2018). Sarah obtained a Bachelor of Science in 2009 (Psychology major), and a Graduate Diploma in Business Studies in 2010 (Management major), both from Massey University. She lives in Palmerston North, New Zealand.


Katharine Samuel

Katharine worked as an Interlibrary loan librarian in Information Services at the University of Canterbury (Christchurch, New Zealand) central library for 20 years before retiring in 2009. She has a library qualification and a BA (Canterbury) in Art History. Katharine has two daughters, and enjoys tramping, reading, travel, history, track and field athletics, sociology, concerts, theatre, art, and opera.


Lesley Aitken

Lesley currently lives in the central North Island, but has a nomadic lifestyle with her husband working in locum ministry. She has worked in education for over 40 years, including: secondary teaching in maths, English, and physical education; tertiary tutoring in distance education; and supporting students in Auckland Prison. Life outside of work involves boating, skiing, tennis, indoor bowls, and quieter pursuits such as reading and dressmaking.


Support Team


Philippa Proctor 

Based in Palmerston North, New Zealand, Philippa has worked as a typesetter for close to 25 years, bringing journals, newsletters, and manuscripts to print ready stage. Her current portfolio includes all of these forms, including the typesetting for SBP Journal for over 20 years. In 2008, she set up her own venture, Pip’s Pre-Press Services, accepting casual, short-term, and long-term typesetting contracts. In 2014 she began working full-time at Ezibuy as part of the Creative team, in addition to continuing her work with SBP Journal and spending time with her three teenaged children. 

Fanchao (Franco) Meng
Chinese translator

Fanchao (Franco) Meng has worked for SBP Journal since 2013 as a Chinese translator. He is responsible for monitoring the SBP social media account on Sina Weibo, and translation of journal documents including newsletters and marketing materials.  Fanchao obtained a Bachelor of Animal Science in 2010 and a Master of Communication in 2013, majoring in Photo Media.  He is interested in traveling, swimming, music, art, and photography. He lives in Perth, Western Australia.



Lili (Lily) Jia
Publications Assistant

Lily joined SBP Journal in 2015 as Publications Assistant, and is the journal’s contact person for subscription queries, as well as being responsible for monitoring the SBP databases and packaging and dispatch of print issues. While living in China, Lily obtained a Bachelor of Engineering (2005) and a Master of Engineering (2009), majoring in Food Science and Engineering. After moving to New Zealand in 2012 to pursue further academic study, Lily completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Science (Human Nutrition major) and is currently a PhD candidate at Massey University, Palmerston North.


Patricia Prince
Operations Assistant 

Patricia joined the SBP Journal team in 2013 as Operations Assistant. Canadian-born, Patricia spent her childhood in Canada, Germany, and the Caribbean, and more recently has lived in Central and South America. She currently lives in British Columbia, Canada. Patricia also works as a contract writer and editor specializing in authors who speak English as a second language. She previously worked in the Department of Medicine at the University of British Columbia and the BC Children’s Hospital, and has marketing, copywriting, and editing experience in the fields of travel, leisure, design, and business. Patricia loves to read and write.
