Based on the data from Taiwan’s Elderly Health and Living Status Survey (Bureau of Health Promotion, 2003), in this paper an analysis was carried out of the sources and levels of income of Taiwan elderly and their correlation with sex, age, education, marital status, and number of children. We found that elderly men tended to have higher levels of income and more institutional income sources than women did, and that elderly women relied more on personal sources of income. Elderly people who had been married and who had many children were found to have lower income than did those with few children. Reduced work and spouse’s death were identified as the 2 events most likely to cause income change for the elderly between 1989 and 2000.
