In this study we aimed to show that a change in ethnocentrism could be accomplished through the use of behavior modification techniques. A total of 18 Caucasian participants were divided into 6 groups: 3 control groups and 3 experimental groups. In 1 control and 1 experimental condition, participants read statements printed on index cards. Experimental group participants were reinforced for reading certain anti-ethnocentric statements. Control group participants received no reinforcement no matter what statements they made. In a second condition, participants underwent a structured interview with experimental participants being reinforced for anti-ethnocentric statements. Attitude change was determined by subtracting the pretest from the posttest scores on the Ethnocentrism Scale which was administered to all participants. Results showed that reinforcement was effective in producing attitude change.
